B.C. Learning Centres for Children with Dyslexia Policies for Parental Acknowledgement
Please take a moment to read through our “Policies for Parent Acknowledgement” to ensure you are familiar with our policies here at B.C. Learning Centres for Children with Dyslexia. Prior to commencing any tutoring sessions, it is important that our policies be understood by all parents and/or guardians of our students. If there are any questions or concerns about this memorandum, please contact the Learning Centre Director as soon as possible via email or phone. We will be more than happy to clarify any policies or answer any questions. Upon acceptance into our Program, you will be required to sign “Form CD-5 Policies for Parental Acknowledgement” in order to ensure that you have read, understood, and agreed to the terms and conditions of B.C. Learning Centres for Children with Dyslexia.
Regular and prompt attendance at tutoring sessions is essential. Inconsistent attendance hinders your child’s progress. Because we have a list of children awaiting tutoring, the Learning Centre restricts services only to those children who attend regularly, and your child is expected to attend tutoring sessions on a regular basis. If your child is unable or unwilling to attend, or if your child, for whatever reason, is chronically or frequently late for sessions, the Learning Centre will have to consider terminating the tutoring. It is expected that attendance at the Learning Centre will take precedence over extra-curricular activities.
Planned absences should be called in to the Learning Centre 24 hours or more in advance of your child’s tutoring time unless there is an emergency or illness, in which case, prompt notification of the Centre would be appreciated.
We may have visitors to our Centre to observe tutoring sessions. These visitors may include professionals or students involved in communicative disorders, special education or related professions; individuals from other Learning Centres or from the community; and members of the Scottish Rite. These observations help others learn about our Centre, our services, and about dyslexia. Our Centre personnel will ensure a minimum of distraction.
RELEASE OF INFORMATION FOR RESEARCH POLICY
As a parent of a child attending the Learning Centre, you give permission to the Centre personnel of the Learning Centre to use assessment data and information gathered during tutoring for the purposes of compiling research on the effectiveness of the tutoring program. It is understood that your child’s name will not be used, that all data will be confidential, and that the information will be recorded in such a way that there is no reference to your child’s name in any publications resulting from this research.
We often photograph/video-record the children receiving services at our Centre. The photographs may appear in brochures or other literature about our Centre, and the video-recording may be used as part of an educational/professional presentation or to monitor tutoring sessions. All sessions are unobtrusively monitored by Centre personnel.
Our goal is to have your child make optimum progress in language skills. This depends on many factors including ability and motivation. We want to ensure that our tutoring program matches your child’s needs. Therefore, all children are accepted into the program on a trial basis.
Inclusion in our program is dependent on your child’s needs and participation. A child completes the program when our curriculum has been completed, and as determined by his/her performance, ability and motivation. If the child fails to make adequate progress in the curriculum because of absenteeism, attitude, effort, or other reason, the child may be terminated from the program so that another child may benefit.
Transportation of a child to and from the centre for any activity associated with the program is the sole responsibility of the parent.
SHARING INFORMATION WITH YOUR CHILD’S TEACHER AND SCHOOL
It is important that a child’s progress be shared with his/her teacher and school, and you, the parent, agree that the centre may do so.
Where possible, 24 hours notice is required to cancel a scheduled tutoring session. No make-up classes are offered for “no shows”. Please be advised when registering at the B.C. Learning Centres for Children with Dyslexia, your commitment is for the term.

It is expected that students arrive on time for their lessons.
We appreciate that your child has a lot going on. Please keep in mind when registering for a term that it is difficult to switch days and times mid-session. We will try our best to accommodate where possible.
Your child commits to attend all of the lessons for the tuition/school year, with the exception of public school holidays only. These holidays include Labour Day, Thanksgiving, Remembrance Day, Winter Vacation, Family Day, Spring Break, Good Friday, Easter Monday, and Victoria Day.
Snacks are more than welcome at the centre to aid your child’s concentration. As many children and tutors have allergies, please ensure the snack is nutritious and peanut-free.
